Disclaimer: I don't usually like to name names but it makes the story a little easier to understand.
The Beginning
So my cheer career began when I was around 7 years old and I joined a cheerleading class at my school. Because it was just a class run by an outsider (a dance teacher who wasn't connected to the school) we had no kind of equipment and we practised in a room at school called "the Quad" which was basically a big open room full of computers, art supplies, books and the photocopier.
We didn't have any mats and we danced on carpet over cement so it wasn't the most comfortable. I don't particularly remember having any music or "pom-poms" but to be honest, it was just something fun to do with my friends (my best friend at primary school was a girl called Chloe who I started cheer with and we actually both cheer now but we're on different teams).
I do have a memory however of trying to come up with a name for our team, because we were at a Catholic school, it was a bit risky to mess with the name (another school which wasn't Catholic had a team called the Warstones Wildcats) and I don't think we actually had a name in the end!
I continued to do this class all through primary school and when I was about 9 (I'm completely guessing here!) we moved from the Quad to a church hall nearby. Although this meant we could have more people (the teacher ran classes at several schools so I guess moving meant we could all cheer at the same time) the facilities were actually worse. We weren't even on carpet here and the space was a lot more compacted so we were very restricted space-wise!
We definitely had music here because I remember the old CD player we had with some variation of Now That's What I Call Music always playing.
This bigger group meant we could do harder routines and more creative dancing. This is where Donna's Cheerleading Squad began.
Donna's Cheerleading Squad
As you probably figured, the cheer teacher was a lady called Donna who I thought was lovely - I'd known her since I was 7 so she was kind of a big influence in my life - and she was actually a really good teacher. I remember how much she let us get involved in decision making and she was one of those people that just got excited about everything.
Anyway, this new team was mostly made up of kids from my school and I always think of me and Chloe as being the oldest there although we may not have been! It wasn't really anything special to me and I don't remember feeling any great emotions towards going to class but I went for 4 years so I guess I enjoyed it!
Because we didn't have any kind of safety - or safe - equipment, we had to be very careful when doing "stunts". Of course we didn't do any proper stunts but there were a couple lifts in the routine. Thankfully, I don't remember anyone getting hurt from doing these stunts, but I do remember something that went very wrong for me!
The Stunt
So in my final year at Donna's Cheerleading Squad, there was a big showcase that we were preparing for (it wasn't really a showcase just a little routine in front of parents but it made us feel important calling it a showcase) and we were working really hard. As a finale for our showcase routine, Donna had us do a big stunt that was - what I remember as - 8 or 9 girls stood in a circle attempting to lift one person up. Again, for safety reasons, the lightest person was lifted up but the lightest person was also the smallest so lifting her up had no real effect.
Although I was only about 11 when this happened, I knew what was a good idea and what wasn't, so seeing this poor excuse of a stunt, I turned to Chloe and said something along the lines of "that's rubbish." Unfortunately for me, a nosey child heard me and decided to tell Donna. The conversation then went something like this:
Donna: What's rubbish?!
Me: [shocked that she heard me] Umm ... just ... *spinning around desperately trying to make the ground swallow me up* ... this.
I don't entirely remember what happened next or if there even was more of a conversation but I do remember sitting with Chloe at one end of the room with Donna at the other crying. I was only 11 and had never got into an argument with an adult before so I was a bit scared and confused about what to do so I just kept quiet.
Again, I'm not sure what happened for the rest of the session but I was made, by my mum, to apologise to Donna for what I said which ended up with me crying and walking out of the church. This all happened unfortunately the week before the showcase.
The Showcase
When I got home after that session, my mum seemed a lot calmer and wasn't really too bothered about what had happened but I remember feeling so mad about the situation that I wanted to quit right there and then and leave them hanging for the showcase - what a diva I was!
But Mum obviously wasn't going to let that happen and she made me go. When we turned up to the showcase, at least 10 kids I had never seen before appeared and claimed they were part of our team so the opening pose (everyone stood in a line) left me and Chloe in a little porch outside of the church hall where we couldn't be seen and - being the naughty children we were - we decided that this meant we didn't have to dance so we stood there pulling faces for the first part!
Anyway, we did the routine and I'm pretty sure that stupid stunt wasn't even in the routine in the end and then Donna gave a little speech when we finished. Of course she mentioned our little incident - which made me feel really stupid - and then privately asked me and Chloe if we would be coming back in September (we were leaving primary school so I guess we had a choice) and we both immediately said no.
So with that part of my life over I decided to close that chapter and move on but I ended with a statement I will never ever say again:
"I'm never going to do cheerleading ever again."
Break
So after leaving Donna's Cheerleading Squad (and primary school) I decided to take a break from most of the sports I was doing (I stopped gymnastics and swimming at age 12 too, but I kept trampolining) which kind of explained why I started eating properly and gaining weight but that's a whole other story.
Anyway, for the first year and a half of secondary school, I mostly focused on trampolining and joined the school's netball team but in 2010, my younger sister joined a cheerleading team that was running at the school next to mine (mostly to help her move from primary to secondary school and because her friends were leaving Donna's Cheerleading Squad and she didn't want to be left alone there!) Obviously, I will still sticking to my statement but then I went to watch a competition with them.
New Team
The competition I went to watch was an ICC event in Nottingham I think and to be honest, I wasn't too thrilled about having to go but thank God I did! I don't remember a lot about that day and I'm guessing they didn't place too high (they were just a tiny team from Wolverhampton) but that wasn't the point, I was hooked.
Watching the girls compete was like watching celebrities on stage and I wanted to be a part of that (let's not lie, I wanted to be Hannah Montana) so I went home, thought about it and decided to eat my words. I asked Mum if I could join cheerleading and she said yes! (I'm actually getting butterflies in my stomach thinking about this!)
Crimson Tide
So at some point in 2011, I joined Crimson Tide to train at their new venue of the Royal School in Wolverhampton. I remember my first day quite clearly which is weird! I remember attempting to fit in by wearing clothes that somehow blended in with uniform at the time (a pink top and shorts) but it kind of made me stand out even more!
I remember sitting on a bench and one of the coaches coming up to me to say hi and the look on the other girls faces because they didn't realise we knew each other (we didn't know each other directly but we knew names and our parents worked together once!) but I remember standing at the back attempting to keep up with the girls dancing.
I've never really been into dancing (other than my time at Donna's Cheerleading Squad) and I only had basic gymnastic skills so I found the whole cheerleading thing a bit hard but I worked at it and I've realised cheer is now just a part of me.
My very first competition with Crimson Tide was in 2011 at Future Cheer Nationals in Bournemouth which I don't remember much off and I don't even think we stayed for awards but it's nice to look back and say my first competition was one of the biggest the UK has!
From then on I've competed in Crystal Palace, Loughborough and Telford along with Bournemouth 3 more times. I've also trained at 3 different venues with my team but I finally feel as though we've settled at Wolverhampton Gymnastics Club which is great because we have amazing facilities that are really helping us progress!
Cheerleading really has taught me so much more than simple teamwork skills. It's taught me how to put 150% into everything I do and to not stop until I reach perfection and how to have so much passion for something you would literally put your life on hold for that one thing.
My Stories
Being on one team for such a long time, I obviously have a lot so stories to tell but, because most of them have pictures to go with them, I'm going to show the picture and then explain. They're in a bit of a random order but I tried to explain them as well as I could!
This picture was taken downstairs at Bournemouth in 2012 and is our junior team getting a pep talk before going to warm-up from a senior member. I don't remember where they were but we couldn't find the coaches and it was only when we got into warm-up that we realised no-one had any makeup on. I remember rushing to stick glitter on our eyes and having to do it to each other instead of the coaches doing it. Thankfully, we've learnt to do our own makeup so this won't happen again!
This is me and my sister after we had a spray tan for the first time (she had 3 coats of tan so she's a
lot darker than me!) at Bournemouth in 2013. I hated getting it done because I like the keep my body to myself and not stand there naked while some stranger paints me! It did look really good though!
Loughborough used to be my favourite competition because there was so much space to practise and this is the junior team practising outside in 2012 - note my dodgy fake tanned arms (I'm the one in the middle kneeling down) - and I remember possibly one of the funniest things that has ever happened at cheer:
Gemma: *looks at arm* Urgh! What's that?!
[notices big black smudge on her white uniform]
*everyone else surveys the floor looking for signs of poop*
Gemma: Oh my God! It's Zahra's eyebrow!
Yes, someone's eyebrow was now on Gemma's uniform! I also have a memory of Loughborough (but I'm not sure it was the same year) where we went to warm-up and were told we were too early so went and got lunch and then walked back to warm-up and was told we were late! I guess you could say we're not the best time keepers in the world!
When I joined Crimson Tide, we were training at the Royal School - which was actually their second venue - but since then, we moved to Aldersley High School (where we are here in 2013) and then onto Wolverhampton Gymnastics Club. When we were at Aldersley, the coaches were beginning to make the decision to move us up a level and so we sparked this huge mission to recruit more members. That's why this photo was taken.
It makes me laugh looking at this because of how hard we tried to hide the people not in uniform (if you can only see a persons head, most likely they don't have a uniform on!) and I'm sure we took lots of pictures but I've only ever seen this one!
This is a really cute picture of some of our team members before we went out for a meal in Bournemouth in 2012 (which is kind of a Crimson Tide tradition now) and after we got given some awards. I did receive a certificate for Most Improved but I don't have it here!
She's going to hate me for putting this on, but this is Holly sleeping on the way to Loughborough for day 2 of competition in 2013. The juniors had competed the day before and so they were very tired! I remember sitting at the back of the coach with 3 other juniors all saying they were going to sleep but I didn't think they actually were so when I looked up and they were all unconscious, I was a little shocked and just had to take a picture! (sorry Holly!)
Over my time at Crimson Tide, I've acquired several different T-shirts. This is just one of them which we were given at Bournemouth 2012. I love these tops because everyone - including all the families - had one so it makes us look like a cheesy little cheer family!
This is one of my favourite pictures ever of our senior team and was taken before we went to warm-up at Telford in 2013. I love how it just captures us all perfectly but it's also quite sad because this was the last time we performed as this team (some of my best cheer friends left after this to go to a bigger team) but it was also the competition before I went to LA on holiday and we came third and were invited to US Finals 2014 so it's a very bittersweet picture for me!
I think this was taken at Loughborough in 2013 and is me, my sister and my dad after competing. I remember sitting on my dad's lap after we competed because I landed a bit funky and bruised my thigh and knee but it's still a nice memory! Loving my brace face too!
This isn't really a picture but a still from a video of our senior team at Loughborough in 2013 and it really makes me laugh because it just shows how proud we are of each other when we compete.
In Bournemouth 2013, we had a bit of a drama filled time at the hotel because we couldn't use our shower and had to use a shower outside of our room. This is me and my roommates outside the bathroom where we had to shower and Holly is still in her pyjamas!
We made a bit of a mess of the bathroom because one of the towels ended up covered in fake tan and the other was covered in blood because someone cut their leg and used to towel to soak it up!
This is another bittersweet memory of Bournemouth 2013. We stopped at a service station on the way to Bournemouth where we met up with some old members of our team which was lovely because we weren't expecting it! We hugged really quick and ran off to get back on the minibus and then we saw them again at the competition.
Speaking of the minibus, this is me, Holly and Rhiannon at the back of the bus on the way to Bournemouth 2013. It was a very cramped bus and was very hot! It took 3 hours to get there but it was great and exciting for them because it was their first time in Bournemouth.
The journey was a bit eventful as it started off with one seatbelt not working, then someone brought tuna so the bus smelt of fish and it was very hot but John (the coach's boyfriend) bought us all ice lollies which was so kind of him and we were very grateful for them!
This photo was taken outside of our hotel in Bournemouth 2013 after our meal where everyone accidentally turned up in blue!
This photo makes me laugh because it's me, Holly and Rhiannon trying to have our picture taken at the service station on the way to Bournemouth 2013 but laughing as a car was trying to reverse around the camera woman (Rhiannon's mum) but it just captures what the competition was all about - fun and friends.
This is a cute competition picture of our starting position at Bournemouth in 2013 which made us feel very cool because it was so different to any opening we had ever done before. Unfortunately, we were not happy with our performance but we did manage to get 5th place!
This was taken outside the Bournemouth International Centre in 2013 before we went on to compete. It was taken at about 8am so we were all still a bit tired! I had been up since 4:14 that morning because we forgot to close the curtains or the window and the seagulls woke me up!
This is another sad but happy memory of Telford 2013 as we were dancing before awards and I remember dancing with Lauren (one of the girls that was leaving) to Don't You Worry Child so I always think of her when I hear that song!
Sometime in 2013, we had a get together meal which only 7 of us actually went to but it was really fun as we were stunting outside and playing on the playground!
This is just a simple picture of us stunting and I'm not even sure this is part of our routine but this is one of our first Level 2 stunts that we did and it's nice because it shows the kind of backstage work behind the stunts.
This is me receiving my award from coach Kim at Bournemouth in 2012 because I was the Most Improved cheerleader! This is still one of my most treasured and proud moments!
This is another one of my favourite pictures ever as it shows the friendship between me, Loren (my sister) and Lauryn (one of my cheer best friends) which was taken in Bournemouth 2012.
This is another picture of me, Loren and Lauryn but this was taken at Crystal Palace in 2011 I think after we had our makeup done. Unfortunately, I had a little allergic reaction to the paw print sticker on my face!

I want to take this moment to say thank you to everyone who has been a part of my cheerleading life - both past, present and future - because you've really helped me become who I am today and I owe my life to each and every one of you.
